What’s New In Apple’s IOS 13 Beta 6

Another great addition to macOS 13 Ventura beta is the Stage Manager feature, which not only is available to the iPad but will also help users organize their workflows between apps and windows. For the first time, this operating system also brings two new stock apps: Clock and Weather.

What’s new in Apple’s iOS 13 beta 6

If you spot any changes in macOS 13 Ventura beta 6, let us know in the comments below or on Twitter @9to5Mac. Stay tuned for our full hands-on coverage with the releases right here at 9to5Mac if we find anything new.

- Folder Transparency - Apple has changed folder transparency in iOS 13 beta 6, making folder backgrounds better match the color of your background. Comparison image via the MR forums.

- Announce Messages - The Setting for allowing Siri to announce incoming text messages when connected to second-generation AirPods and some Beats headphones has been removed in iOS 13 beta 6.

- Background Location Warnings - Apple warns iOS 13 users when apps are using their location in the background. In beta 6, the warning text has been tweaked slightly, and now reads "Do you want to continue to allow background location use?" instead of "Do you want to continue to allow this?"

Apps built for iOS 16.1 beta 3, iPadOS 16 beta 10, macOS 13 beta 9, tvOS 16.1 beta 3, and watchOS 9.1 beta 3 using Xcode 14.1 beta 3 can now be submitted for internal and external testing, with support for Background Assets in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

Apple dropped the sixth public beta for iOS 13 today, Aug. 15. This public update comes just hours after the release of developer beta 7, an interesting move for Apple. The company has recently stuck to a schedule of seeding the public beta at least one day after the developer beta, presumably to weed out any debilitating bugs that might have gone unnoticed.

When you download public beta 6, you'll notice some new changes right off the bat. Apple has added new blocking options for the Mail app, renamed the "Dark Appearance" shortcuts to "Dark Mode," and restored folders to their normal transparency levels.

The iOS & iPadOS 13 SDK provides support for developing apps for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices running iOS & iPadOS 13. The SDK comes bundled with Xcode 11 beta available from Beta Software Downloads. For information on the compatibility requirements for Xcode 11, see Xcode 11 Beta 5 Release Notes.

If your watch is running watchOS 6 beta, you must update it to watchOS 6 beta 2 or later before updating to iOS 13 beta 6, otherwise your watch will no longer be able to connect to your phone. (52854192)

While the numbering scheme can be confusing, don't mistake this public beta as one behind the developers. Yes, five comes before six, but these numbers aren't here to correspond with one another. When Apple released the first dev beta for iOS 13, it didn't release a companion public beta. Instead, Cupertino waited until the second dev beta to release a public beta. That meant public beta 1 was the same as dev beta 2. And the rest is history.

Because dev beta 6 arrived a day before public beta 5, we already know what today's upgrade has in store for us. You can see the new features and changes in our list below. Not included is a claim that Apple changed the volume increments from 32 in public beta 4 to the original iOS default of 16 in public beta 5. At this time, we can't verify that claim.

In the first four public betas, you could only toggle Dark Mode on and off via the brightness slider in Control Center. In public beta 5, you can speed up this process by adding a Dark Mode toggle to Control Center. The brightness slider's toggle will still be there, but you can skip that extra step with the Control Center tile.

Whether your iPhone is 3D Touch-capable or not, iOS 13 allows you to peek links to see both a website preview and an actions menu. Now, public beta 5 enables you to hide this website preview so that you can focus more on the options rather than the site at hand.

Some of us liked the decision to make the LTE, 4G, and 5Ge icons in the status bar larger in public beta 4. However, that "decision" apparently was more of a bug, as the icons are back to normal in public beta 5.

If you take a look at the folders on your home screen in public beta 5, you'll notice that more color from your wallpaper comes through than before. While we would typically be inclined to think this move was intentional, the icon size bug mentioned above has us second-guessing this change. We'll just have to see what Apple does with the folders next update.

While Apple doesn't publish specific release notes for public betas, you can check out the notes for iOS 13 developer beta 6's instead. Because public beta 5 is the same as dev beta 6, you can read these release notes as if they were written for your public beta:

Along with the addition of the battery percentage in the Status Bar, Apple surprised everyone by allowing users to enjoy haptic feedback when typing on the built-in software keyboard. Until now, this was only available when using third-party keyboard apps, such as Gboard, and was a popular feature for those who jailbroke their iPhone back in the day. While the haptic feedback is still available, many users are reporting that the vibration intensity continues to decrease as new versions of the beta are released. Unfortunately, Apple does not currently provide any options to increase (or decrease) the vibration intensity, only giving you an option to toggle this on or off.

iOS 13.7 lets you opt-in to the COVID-19 Exposure Notifications system without the need to download an app. System availability depends on support from your local public health authority. For more information see covid19.apple.com/contacttracing. This release also includes other bug fixes for your iPhone.

Tapping with three fingers brings up the cut/copy/paste controls anywhere in the OS. The ability to announce messages on the second generation set of AirPods has been removed in this beta. The wording on the background location popup modal has been tweaked. The location, analytics, and Apple Pay privacy policies were also tweaked.

Typically a developer beta version of iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 is released first, and is soon followed by a public beta build that is labeled as a version number behind. For example iOS 13 dev beta 6 is typically iOS 13 public beta 5, even if they carry the same build number.

iOS 16 beta 6 is finally here, exactly a week after the iOS 16 beta 5 launched. Beta 5 first brought the battery indicator feature to iOS 16, an essential feature previously only available on devices such as Android, Windows, Symbian, Java, etc.

Apple has finally launched iOS 16 beta 6 alongside iPadOS 16 beta 6, watchOS 9 beta 6, tvOS 16 beta 6, and HomePodOS 16 beta 6. Apple users know that as beta versions of iOS get closer to a stable release date, the size of the install package reduces.

The pattern remains the same here: iOS 16 beta 6 is a minor iOS 16 beta update, taking only 426.5 MB. The build number for this update is 20A5349b. The 'b' at the end of the build number indicates that the iOS 16 beta is getting close to its final stable build.

Beta 6 for iOS 16 became available to developers yesterday (August 15), a week after iOS 16 beta 5 debuted. There was a 12-day gap between the beta 4 and beta 5 releases and an even longer wait between beta 3 and beta 4.

Whether that happens at the beginning of September or at some other point in the fall, the clock is clearly ticking on a finalized version of iOS 16. So it seems likely that updates to the beta from here on out are going to focus on getting the software release ready for a general audience.

In iOS 16 beta 4, a Live Activities API appeared, presumably to give developers a chance to test the feature with their own apps. As of iOS 16 beta 6, though, there's no longer support for live activities for third-party apps according to a developer posting on Twitter (opens in new tab).

If you haven't already tried out iOS 16, you can still download the iOS 16 public beta. All you'll need is an iPhone 8 or later. Refer to our iOS 16 public beta hands-on to see what to expect once you install the beta on your iPhone.

If all goes according to the previous release schedule we can expect Apple to release the iOS 16 beta 6 update at some point between Monday 15 August and Wednesday 17 August. Apple has been playing fairly fast and loose with the days that it releases these updates on this year, so almost any day that week is a good bet at this point.

After announcing its big yearly operating system update in its WWDC keynote on June 6, 2022, and following months of beta testing, Apple made iOS 16 available to be installed on iPhones on September 12, 2022, followed by iPadOS 16.1 on October 24. But while tons of new features have arrived, there is still more to come as Apple continues to work on iOS 16.

In iOS 16 Lock Screen is customizable (changing colors and fonts, for example) and upgradable with widgets for keeping an eye on the weather, your Activity rings, or whatever other information you need easy access to. And, rather like the faces on the Apple Watch, it will be possible to create multiple Lock Screens, each with its own wallpaper and widgets, and easily switch between them. See: All the ways you can customize your Lock Screen in iOS 16. We also look at how to keep your Lock Screen clean without missing a notification. New customization options arrived in iOS 16.1 so can now choose to customize the Home screen and Lock screen separately. 2ff7e9595c
